Darkest hour

2011 ended, and 2012 arrived without much of a bang.

Mostly because we walked to the far end of the jetty, to discover that the fireworks were set off at the opposite direction.

There are some movies which would have done better as short films, rather than being expanded as a feature film.

The Darkest Hour is one of those. The trailer preview had us wanting more. The movie itself - quoting a friend of mine - "lets you experience the darkest hour in your entire movie-watching life." I had a premonition of that when the dialogue began in the starting scenes. All the characters in the entire movie seem to have a lot of difficulty having conversations with each other. I actually wonder now if they had scripts to rehearse with.

I had to wash off the bad aftertaste of the movie by re-watching episodes of Avatar: Last Airbender. In fact, one of the character's dialogue would have suited well in the aforementioned movie..."
In the darkest times, hope is something you give yourself. That is the meaning of inner strength."
But if those aliens had invaded Malaysia and started causing blackouts here... well, let's just say the blackout scene in the Russian disco automatically made me think of Nasi Lemak 2.0's transition/blackout scene. No electricity again ah?! Why always blackout one???

Prior to the movie, I was at the bookstore reading a book that caught my attention.

It Happened On The Way To War.
by Rye Barcott.

A biography/memoir of a former Marine who co-founded an NGO in Africa called Carolina for Kibera. I only managed to read a couple of chapters, but am definitely interested to go back and buy the book. A couple of phrases that were impressed on me -
"Talent is universal, opportunity is not."
"Most setbacks were temporary if you approached them with the right attitude."

Something to think about for this new year.
